July 5, 2018- Kotzebue

July 05, 2018

The Miss Arctic Circle and Miss Teen Arctic Circle pageant is a 4th of July tradition in Kotzebue. Outfits include atikluks and parkys, mukluks and seal skin mittens. The winner is crowned with jade and ivory, and traditionally uses the honor as an opportunity to hone their leadership traveling around the country (and world) to share Arctic values, stories, and challenges.

On the bottom, Kaylie Stalker from Kotzebue takes her first walk as Miss Teen Arctic Circle for 2018. On the top, Miss Arctic Circle 2017 gives a last walk in front of a crowd before bestowing her crown and sash onto DavidAnn Mills, who will reign in 2018.

June 10, 2018 - The Grand Canyon

June 10, 2018

We spent 9 days of May + June rafting the Grand Canyon this year, where the Colorado River cuts through more than a billion years worth of rock.

6500 feet down in the canyon, floating on the cold Colorado, surrounded by Zoroaster granite marbled into Vishnu chist, and fluted columns of sandstone, you can count a billion years back into the past, through the layers.

We went to celebrate my dad's 70th. Nothing makes 70 seem insignificant like geologic time.  Happy birthay, Dad - we're now planning your 115th.
